The coming generations of macromolecular materials will take increasing inspiration from living systems to allow for the implementation of truly active, adaptive, dynamic and self-regulating features. As such they will go beyond the present concepts of relatively static bioinspired materials, in which kinetically controlled states are important, and the move towards complex far-from-equilibrium macromolecular systems exploiting complex signaling and feedback mechanisms as well as chemical fuels will be an inevitable milestone. In this special session, we wish to inspire and fuel discussions and research in this direction by highlighting approaches towards generating structures, functions and materials in far-from-equilibrium systems.
